Parviz Nemati

Mr. Nemati has been a collector of antique textiles for seventy years.  He is a world-renowned expert, advisor, curator, dealer and author of three books on the topics of rugs, carpets, and tapestries from across the globe.

 

Raised in a family of educators, he grew up among the weavers in Kerman, the ancient city and center of Persian rug weaving for centuries.  After completing his education in the United States, he settled in New York City where he opened his first gallery in 1964, becoming the youngest dealer of Oriental carpets in the city.  He managed galleries for decades on Madison Avenue and in the prestigious Art and Design Building.

Mr. Nemati has served as the principal exhibitor for several touring exhibitions, including Heritage of the Middle East, which debuted at the Philadelphia Civic Center Museum, Symbols of Faith, at the National Geographic Society Museum in Washington, DC, and Shawls of the East, which featured artworks published in his book of the same title.  

 

He has authored three landmark books on antique textiles, each a valuable reference book for curators, collectors and investors, including the first of its kind to assess the investment value of carpets:

  • Rugs as an Investment (Agate Press, New York, 1980, 102 color plates, 209 pages)

  • The Splendor of Antique Rugs and Tapestries (Rizzoli and PDN Communications, New York, 2001, 301 color plates, 409 pages),

  • Shawls of the East: from Kerman to Kashmir. (PDN Communications, New York, 2003, 42 color plates, 332 pages).

Mr. Nemati's customers and clients include influential figures around the world such as John Lennon and Yoko Ono, George Soros, Mike Bloomberg, among many others.  He has been featured in Barron's, The Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, HALI magazine, on Money Talk on ABC television, The Joan Hamburg Show on WOR radio in New York, among other media outlets.

Future plans include establishment of a foundation dedicated to preserving and promoting textile arts, and the publication of his first novel.

 

His son, the expert consultant and dealer, Darius Nemati, is proprietor of Nemati Collection which offers a broad assortment of contemporary and antique rugs, plus cleaning and restoration services.
